This newsletter/report outlines the many milestones St. Francis Mission reached during the year and provides various metrics to illustrate how our programs are affecting positive change and improving peoples’ lives.
This newsletter highlights one way your gifts make a difference: fighting hunger. Research shows that communities like ours have unique challenges that make affording nutritious food more difficult, including transportation issues, low-wage jobs, and underemployment.
This special end-of-year newsletter highlights our work and some of the results we’ve achieved in 2024. Every program we offer—each success story—exists because of your generosity. With your support, we’re making a difference, helping our Lakota people thrive.
When the COVID pandemic finally wound down two years ago, Sapa Un Jesuit Academy faced new challenges with our reading program. Learn what we are doing to face these challenges.
An American Dental Association study found that 90 percent of the Lakota people on the Rosebud Reservation have chronic tooth decay or gum disease. This is our harsh reality – a dental health crisis that is the result of living in one of the poorest counties in the United States.
Alcohol and other addictions among our people are an epidemic. They can take lives and destroy communities. Learn about the difficulties that addiction presents to our people, and the ways we are supporting recovery.
Introducing Fr. Edmund Yainao, SJ, the newly installed pastor of SFM, and some highlights of SFM’s work this year made possible through the generous support of caring people like you.
Ever since the St. Francis Mission was established, religious education has played an essential role in our work. Our sacramental/faith formation programs are providing preparation for baptism three times a year, confirmation once a year and first communion twice a year.
In September 2013, St. Francis Mission began a school based on the Jesuit Nativity model of schools. Today, our school is now Sapa Un Jesuit Academy—one of 84 schools across the US known as the Jesuit School Network.
On the 50th anniversary as a Jesuit in 1947, SFM constructed a museum to display Father Eugene Buechel’s collection of photographic negatives, prints, diaries and a large collection of native Sioux artifacts. Today the Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum’s collection is one of the most important historical and sociological records in the state.
